WELCOME TO OLD TRAIL

A whole village, with more than one way to live.

Old Trail brings together a walkable commercial center, varied home types, neighborhood trails, and a public golf club on Crozet's west side.

The village sits south of US-250 in western Albemarle County, across the highway from Western Albemarle High School. Its four current villages—East, West, Village Center, and Village Highlands—build on earlier sections with a wide range of attached and detached homes.

Old Trail is not downtown Crozet, although the two are close enough to enjoy together. It is also not a single all-inclusive resort package: the community association, golf club, swim club, fitness operators, and individual properties have different roles and costs.

PAST & PRESENT

A little history—and what's happening now

A little context for the place you're considering.

How Old Trail took shape Read the story +
  1. 1876

    Crozet's railroad beginning

The wider village grew around a C&O rail stop named for engineer Claudius Crozet. The railroad and Three Notch'd Road shaped the historic center east of Old Trail.

  2. 2004–2005

    A new village takes shape

The golf course opened in this period and Albemarle County approved the Old Trail Village rezoning in September 2005. The plan applied Neighborhood Model ideas: varied housing, connected streets, recreation, and a commercial center.

  3. 2016

    The plan is refined

RealCentralVA's neighborhood history records a reduction of the minimum unit count to 1,000, with buildout then projected around 1,200.

  4. 2024–Today

    A maturing, mixed-use community

The club describes current work across East Village, West Village, Village Center, and Village Highlands. Original sections, newer homes, businesses, and resident amenities now share one large village framework.

01

Old Trail's current development phase centers on four interconnecting villages. Builder releases, home types, and commercial tenants can change; verify what is available on the day you tour.

02

The HOA maintains shared spaces, while golf and swim operate through The Clubs at Old Trail. Do not assume a home purchase includes club membership.

03

The Village Center supports coffee, dining, fitness, services, and local retail. Jaunt's Crozet CONNECT West schedule includes Old Trail Village Center stops on workdays.

ORIENTATION

Villages, Village Center & the road to town

Old Trail Drive connects the neighborhood with US-250. Village Center businesses cluster around Old Trail Drive and Heathercroft Circle, while the golf club and Restoration are at 5494 Golf Drive and the swim club is at 380 Claremont Lane.

RealCentralVA describes US-250 as the northern edge, Old Trail Drive to the south, Crozet Avenue to the east, and the western Albemarle foothills beyond. Use the Old Trail map for orientation, then walk or drive the exact route from a prospective home to the places you will actually use.

“Walkable” here is section-specific. A home near Village Center has a different daily pattern from one on the village's outer streets; crossing US-250 is a separate safety and route question, not an assumption.

REAL ESTATE, WITH CONTEXT

Many home types—and a dated MLS snapshot

Old Trail includes estate homes, detached houses, townhomes, cottages, condos, and apartments. Age, size, housing type, golf or mountain setting, updates, and association structure can make two nearby sales poor direct comparisons.

Jim Duncan's RealCentralVA neighborhood page reports MLS closed sales for the 12 months ending August 16, 2026. These figures describe Old Trail sales compiled by that local source; they are not a live listing feed or a valuation for any property.

Keep the geography straight. Redfin's broader Crozet page separately reports a $540,005 median over the three months ending September 2026, $244 per square foot, 40 average days on market, and 61 September sales. Crozet-wide data and Old Trail's MLS set use different boundaries, windows, and mixes; neither substitutes for current comparable homes.

Ask Jake for an MLS-backed search for the exact section and property type. He can also separate new-construction terms from resale competition and request the relevant association documents.

TRAILS, GOLF & RECREATION

Choose the access you will actually use

The community association lists walking trails, two playgrounds, shared green spaces, a community garden, and fishing ponds. The neighboring Western Park and Lickinghole Creek routes add natural-surface trail options supported by Crozet Trails Crew.

Old Trail Golf Club is privately owned and open to the public, with an 18-hole course, practice facilities, a clubhouse, and a Swing Lab. The seasonal swim club offers pools and pavilion rentals. Golf and swim memberships, tee times, lessons, guest access, and dining are not automatically included with homeownership.

Claudius Crozet Park adds 22 community-owned acres of paths, athletic facilities, a dog park, fitness options, and a year-round pool nearby. Each facility has its own fees and schedule.

Photos show Crozet, not Old Trail homes. No clearly licensed Old Trail street or amenity photographs were found. The hero is downtown Crozet in 2019; the gallery includes Crozet's rail trestle in 2008 and the historic Blue Ridge Tunnel near Rockfish Gap. Every caption says so.

SCHOOL ASSIGNMENTS

Schools: a feeder path, not a promise

The Old Trail association identifies Brownsville Elementary, Henley Middle, and Western Albemarle High as the community's nearby schools. ACPS's published Western feeder pattern is Brownsville Elementary → Henley Middle → Western Albemarle High.

That is orientation only. ACPS assigns schools by home address and notes that its GIS assignments are unofficial until confirmed. Use the official attendance-area page, then contact ACPS Transportation at 434-973-5716 for the exact property and school year.

Verify transportation, program availability, and any approved future boundary change directly. The school building photos are from 2006 and are not assignment guarantees; this guide publishes no school ratings.

GETTING AROUND

US-250, I-64—and a workday transit option

US-250 is the direct east–west route toward Charlottesville and I-64. RealCentralVA estimates 17 miles from Old Trail to the Downtown Mall; that is approximate distance, not a promised drive time. Test the route from the actual home during your normal commuting hours.

Jaunt's Crozet CONNECT West serves Old Trail Village Center on workdays, with published morning service toward UVA and downtown Charlottesville and afternoon return trips, plus an evening loop. Use the official schedule rather than relying on a summary; schedules and stop access can change.

Within Old Trail, some daily trips can be walked from some sections. Most regional errands and many commutes still require a car or a deliberate transit plan.

BEFORE YOU BUY

Things every Old Trail buyer should check

A practical buyer's checklist 6 things to verify +
01

Association by property

Request the current resale certificate and governing documents. Confirm dues, sub-associations, account status, transfer costs, maintenance responsibilities, and any violations for the exact property.

02

Club access is separate

Verify golf and swim membership options, initiation or recurring costs, guest rules, seasonal operations, and any waiting list directly with the club.

03

Housing type & maintenance

Compare townhome, condo, cottage, and detached-home obligations. Do not assume exterior, roof, lawn, insurance, or utility arrangements are the same across villages.

04

New build versus resale

Review builder contracts, lot premiums, included features, completion timing, warranties, and incentives alongside comparable resales and their actual terms.

05

School & daily route

Have ACPS verify the assigned schools. Walk or drive the actual route to Village Center, recreation, work, and shopping rather than relying on a neighborhood-wide label.

06

Utilities & intended use

Confirm providers, internet, rentals, parking, pets, exterior approvals, and any planned home business or renovation in the documents and with the relevant authority.
